Loretta Lynn's Childhood Home

VAN LEAR, KY -  June 14, 2014

Visiting Loretta Lynn's Childhood Home takes you back in time to when times were tough and hard working families worked together to supply what they needed. This old cabin is so far out in the country that you forget that it's not the 1960's. This area is a very beautiful yet secluded place owned by Loretta's brother, Herman Webb. Herman is a very down to earth man and his stories have you wanting to hear more. The house has lots of original furniture from when the house was lived in by their family.
Herman owns this little grocery store which is really neat to see. On display, he has memorabilia of his sisters, Loretta and Crystal. From the grocery store, Loretta's Nephew was kind enough to lead the way to the cabin, he of course, was a very down to earth person as well.
There is a great variety of snacks inside. Who can resist a good snack like a snack cake or some chips?
The grocery store is kind of a local hang out for some people which is nice. There was always people hanging around outside of the store.
There was some neat things around the cabin to look at while waiting for Herman to come to give the tour. It's incredible how good of shape this cabin is and it's all thanks to Herman!
Inside, the house was very small but they made do with the room that they had. The living room and one of the bedrooms was in the same room. There was a fireplace in each bedroom, most likely because of the harsh winters.
There was 2 bedrooms downstairs, the upstairs I'm not so sure about because it was off limits. But it seems like one room was used for a family room and the other was used for other activities. I could be wrong though.
The fireplaces were back to back on each side of the wall. People have been allowed to write messages on the walls which is what is all over the walls, besides the autographed photos hanging on the walls as well.
Moonshine anyone? Kidding. I believe they made moonshine here in the kitchen. The kitchen was very small and very difficult to fit more than 2 people. Some of the kitchen bled over into the dining room.
The dining room was very small as well. The dining room table was somewhat large for the size most things in the house was. The fan was such an amazing thing considering how hot it was that day.
Herman was kind enough to allow me to take photos of his horses. He told me to be careful because the mule will bite. I took his word for it. But there was a dark horse and a beautiful bay horse.
I didn't take any chances with this guy. I just listened to Herman and watched myself. Honestly, from a distance I thought it was a horse.
I love a beautiful bay horse. This horse wouldn't come close to the fence, which is too bad because it was beautiful. I would love to own a horse like that. Or any horse would be fine with me. As long as it doesn't end up being a mule.
Herman said that he has been taking care of the house and that he was the last person to live there out of his whole family.
I asked him about sending fan mail to Loretta and he told me who to send it in the care of which was so nice of him because a few months later I actually got her autograph in the mail so I was very excited. He told me about how someone who came to his store to sell bracelets and he bought one for Loretta and he sent it to her but she never got it. It's too bad she didn't get his nice gift.
I couldn't leave without checking out the famous Butcher Holler Rock!
